Rooftop Cinema // Canvas x Kriterion | PRIDE SPECIAL

During the special Pride edition of Rooftop Cinema (running from July the 31st till August the 6th) the movie programme is curated by Kriterion. Kriterion is a unique movie theater in Amsterdam East that is run exclusively by students (and a cat). Ever since the theater was founded in the 1940s, by former members of the resistance, Kriterion has been providing the city with a cutting-edge cinema programme. For this occasion they handpicked a very eclectic selection of queer movies. So don’t hesitate: grab a ticket, lift off to the seventh floor of Volkshotel, get a bite and a cocktail, and enjoy one of the movie screenings 🌞

Two boys, Ignacio and Enrique, experience love, fear, and abuse in a Catholic boarding school in the 1960s. Father Manolo, the headmaster, is witness to and part of these discoveries. The three meet again many years later, and their past actions and new lives intertwine are interwoven into dazzling effect.

Anne (a terrific Vanessa Paradis), a cut-rate gay-porn director in 1979 Paris, is still reeling (and self-medicating) after a breakup with her lover and film editor, Loïs, when performers in her latest film start falling prey to a screeching, leather-mask-clad killer whose weapon of choice is a switchblade hidden in a dildo. As the body count climbs, Anne becomes ever more determined that the show must go on.

Lalo is a sex influencer: he posts photos of his nude body and homemade porn videos for his thousands of followers on social media. He controls his own life, but in private, when out of character, he seems to live in constant melancholy. Where does your own desire go when your life turns into a sex show? Pornomelancholia takes porn as its starting point to reflect on the relationship between sexuality and work, on living in the public eye yet feeling lonely, on the characters we build around ourselves to show ourselves to (or hide from) the world.

Each year in Cuba, five people are selected for gender-confirmation surgery, leaving many more waiting for their opportunity. Daniel Abma’s documentary Transit Havana follows three Cubans over a year of anticipation and challenges, some related to the surgery and some related to daily life. In a distinctive environment, themes of self-acceptance and fulfillment are universal.
