Let’s start with a few advantages of traveling by train in comparison to flying:
- You stop right in the heart of Amsterdam by train. By metro and tram, you can easily move around the city. In less than five minutes from Amsterdam Central you can be at Volkshotel. Metro stop Wibautstraat stops literally in front of our door.
- No need to check in four hours in advance to take the train. For the real thrillseekers, you can just arrive 10 minutes in advance. And at no extra costs, you can take quite a bit of luggage.
- During your train trip, you can easily check out our cultural programme or listen to our self-curated Spotify playlists. Just via your mobile network or WiFi in the train. No flight mode on and mobile devices off. On the train, you’ll have plenty of time to plan your weekend in Amsterdam.
- Can’t stand it any longer in your seat? Then stretch your legs. No ‚please leave your seatbelts on‘. Plenty of room to move.
- A flight burdens the environment no less than 7 to 11 times as much as the same trip by train. The difference is greatest at a short distance (less than 700 kilometers). Need we say more?

To conclude, a few tips and tricks on how to get the cheapest train tickets:
- Book your tickets six months (Eurostar) or four months (Thalys) before the date of travel. This way you get the most affordable price for a ticket.
- Book your tickets in advance, last minute travel by train is not the most advantageous.
- Mid-week tickets are cheaper than weekend tickets, as fewer people generally travel from Monday to Friday compared to weekends.
