Social media is hindering this process of women, femme bodies and queer bodies reclaiming their bodily autonomy. They are being censored, silenced and (shadow)banned. Instagram profiles itself as an easy-to-access photo and video platform, attracting visual artists and public figures, but gets to decide what imagery is tolerated. Subsequently, Instagram has proven to be a very unsafe space for queer, non-cisgendered and femme artists and bodies. “Your Content Has Been Removed” is the notification you get when you post ‘offensive’ content: female nipples, buttock, pubic hair, and other parts of the natural nude body. The photographs displayed during Pride Month at Volkshotel are the ‘offensive’ works of art that are deemed unsuitable for social media.

Policing the female body is political. Early June of this year we’ve gotten the devastating news that the United States Supreme Court overturned a 50-year-old law that affirmed the constitutional right to abortion. The consequences of this decision will be catastrophic for victims of rape and basically for any other person who would like to make decisions about their own uterus. That is why the opening of this exhibition will remain free of charge and instead the curator would like to ask you to donate to Planned Parenthood – a nonprofit organization that provides reproductive health care in the United States and that will continue to protect access to abortion throughout the country. Please visit plannedparenthood.org for more information. The curator will provide QR codes for easy donation at the exhibition.
Expo opening on August 5. Start 19.30. The exhibition will be on display during August.
