// FILM \\
Banana Pancakes and the Children of Sticky Rice premiered earlier this year at the 44th International Film Festival Rotterdam. The documentary tells a poetic story of what happens when the inhabitants of a small, remote village in Laos, meet Western backpackers in search for untouched beauty.
“An ingenious, universal story about desire… and the effects of globalism” ★★★★ – Het Parool
“Fascinating documentary…full of curiosity and eye for sensuous beauty” ★★★★ – De Volkskrant
“Must-see for backpackers!” – Cinemagazine.nl
// EXPO \\
Film maker Daan Veldhuizen and Berlin-based photographer Philip Bais created a photo series of life-sized portraits of backpackers and locals within the Lao village of Muang Ngoi. In the exhibition I Am Authentic you’re invited to meet these characters and look them straight into their eyes.
What does it mean to be authentic? Are you?
// TALK \\
After the screening of Banana Pancakes and the Children of Sticky Rice, Wilke Martens, travel journalist for Dutch newspaper Trouw, will host a talk with director Daan Veldhuizen and philosopher Ruud Welten, author of the book ”Het ware leven is elders: filosofie van het toerisme” (True life is elsewhere: the philosophy of tourism), going into issues concerning modern tourism. What does tourism say about the way we are in the world? Does it really bring us new experiences or is traveling just an escape from ourselves?
// FOOD & DRINKS \\
Volkshotel’s Werkplaats will serve food and drinks that will take you on an exotic trip to South-East Asia.
