Can you tell us what this room is about?
In this special room I emphasize the strong relationship between Volkshotel and Amsterdam. I did this not only by literally bringing the city into the room, but also by inviting the guests to explore the city in a different and new way. The connection becomes clear in the interior of the special room, which is made of objects and materials that I find on the streets of Amsterdam. These materials were once part of the city, but they were discarded. By bringing these items together in a new way, I not only strengthen the bond between the interior and exterior of the hotel, but I also encourage the guests to explore the beauty of Amsterdam as it is; raw and unpolished
How did you come up with the concept for this room?
My fascination for found materials arose from my work as a designer. I like to work with found materials because the search and the use often lead to unexpected results. On one hand, the search is a great way to explore the city. On the other hand, the items I find give me new ideas. By exploring the city this way, you start to look at your surroundings in a different way. You meet a lot of other interesting people and you often find yourself in unexpected places.
What would you like people to remember about this room when they left the hotel?
With these «worthless» materials I want people to question themselves what is valuable. Furthermore, I hope I can make the guest curious about the locations and the neighborhoods of Amsterdam where I found the things. By ‘getting lost’ in the city, you discover the beauty of Amsterdam as it is, off the beaten track.
