Sophie: “I got to know Volkshotel as a place to study. I sat down in Werkplaats on a regular basis. When I saw that there was a job opening to work behind the reception, the decision to apply was taken quickly. I got hired, which gave me the opportunity to get to know the rest of the concepts a lot better as well.
During this period I enthusiastically participated in the events organized in the building, and I noticed that I had strong opinions and visions when it came to music that was played. I spent a lot of time in Amsterdam’s nightlife and helped out as a volunteer at the Nachtburgemeester foundation. The sum of this parts made it quite logical that I started as a DJ myself during this time. My first real booked evening for an audience was in Werkplaats. Later on, I also started to appear behind the booth at Doka more often. The fact that this all went very organically shows the springboard function of this building and her various locations quite well.
After being away for two years, I couldn’t resist responding again when I figured out that there was a free desk at the Volkshotel office for a producer and programmer. In this role, I can now give other emerging local talents the opportunity to spin records in Werkplaats myself. I think it is very important to look beyond the usual choices though. I would like to see more women behind the decks, just to give an example.
I also have plenty of plans for Canvas, which I want to put back on the map as an accessible place in Amsterdam where you can dance to fun music for free. I would like to invite visitors to linger after dinner. By working with residents, people who know the place well, and linking interesting parties to them, the place can be challenging and innovative every week. You will automatically see that different supporters and target groups come together on the dance floor.
Recently, I started to have a say in the programming of Doka too, where I also want to promote Dutch and local talent. I still go out a lot, from De School to a variety of clubs in Berlin, and therefore think that I can broaden and add a different sound to what is already presented at the Volkshotel concepts at the moment.”
