Hi guys! Hope you are both holding up well, what are you up to at the moment?
Charlie: Holding up okay, of course, it’s a pretty crazy time for everyone at the moment. I decided to stay with my parents in the UK until everything is a bit more stable. I had a weekend trip planned back home to see my family around the same time it all started so it made sense to stay longer. Also, I haven’t spent much quality time with my parents over the last few years so think this is the perfect opportunity.
Joss: I’m doing pretty good! Luckily I’ve not been affected too much by this corona situation. Using this free time to do some serious digging.
Nice! Are you rediscovering your own collection?
Joss: Well, I actually sold about 90% of my collection recently as I’m focusing more on darker electro and breaks these days. Most of my digging I do online. When I started out there weren’t any record shops near me so I got sucked into Discogs right away. Though I do like to go to record stores now and again of course. In Amsterdam, my favorite shops are Bordello A Parigi and Killacutz.
Charlie: Yeah, Bordello is easily the store I spend the most time in as well. It’s the only record store I feel completely comfortable in and don’t have the record store politics.
Shout out to Bordello A Parigi in general! In order to keep their heads above water, they had to close the doors of the shop at this moment, but they’ve put a big part of their stock on their website with discount. How do you guys feel like we can support our scene the best at this moment?
Joss: I think that depends hugely on people’s current situation and level of involvement with the music scene. Buying your favorite artists’ music on Bandcamp seems to be a pretty good way though! Furthermore, it’s great to see so many people across the world releasing new material and mixes or just supporting each other in various ways. I think that speaks to the level of commitment and passion that so many people have for music.
Any tips on mixes, releases or live streams that caught your recent attention?
Joss: Really enjoying HÖR recently, Marie Montexier’s set from a few months ago in particular. We had booked her to play at our party Ecotone at Garage Noord at the start of April but it, of course, can’t go ahead. We will definitely reschedule once this crisis passes.
Charlie: I’ve actually been going through old sets from our parties from other artists that have been collecting dust on my laptop a lot recently, we’re looking into putting a few of our favorites online. I’ve also had this mix from Nicolas Lutz & Craig Richards on repeat, it’s just a masterclass and the control both of them have over a pair of turntables is insane.
Talking about great sets, we can’t get over the recording of your set at Doka. Do you have specific memories of this night?
Joss: Well it was definitely amazing to play in that spaceship of a booth! The system and the mixer as well made it a lot of fun. I hadn’t been to Doka since the renovation so the whole night was pretty special! Though, in particular, dropping our friend Eversines’ track and seeing people go wild was the best moment for me.
Charlie: I also have a very special memory from this night, it was actually my birthday and we went for dinner with some friends beforehand. This was when I received something special. When I was a lot younger I saw Ricardo Villalobos DJ once and he played this one record that blew my mind. Searched for it for years but I could never find it. Until a couple of summers ago, when Joss played it at ://about blank. It’s probably the most excited I’ve ever been to finally discover a record. But after seeing the sky-high Discogs price I never brought it. Luckily, Joss brought it for me as a present and gave it to me at that dinner and attached the sweetest note on it 💕
That’s true love right there. Do you have a track ID of this night you would like to share?
Charlie: Desert sound colony feat. Baby Rollen- I C Jangles. Quite a well-known record by now. It’s nice to see that loads of DJs are going in the direction of breaks at the moment. Personally I think this one of the best records out there that combines breaks with a minimal feel. I don’t think it will ever leave my bag.
Are there actually any other non-DJ-related-quarantine-hobby’s you are developing at the moment?
Joss: Well apart from my usual Discogs obsession I’m trying to build a healthy exercise habit. I live right next to the beautiful Sloterplas so I try to go running there every day, but after years of smoking, I’m not as fit as I used to be haha.
Charlie: My dad is an electrician, and is doing quite a bit of work at my parents’ house at the moment. So he is showing me quite a lot of stuff, I’m actually thinking of doing a course when all this is over. It feels a bit random, but I really enjoy spending this time with him.
What about movies or series?
Charlie: Being with my parents, I’ve been watching lots of classic English sitcoms like Only Fools and Horses or Dad’s Army. The plan for tonight is to watch Austin Powers. But honestly, I’m not the biggest movie or TV person, I don’t really have the patience for it. I’m guilty of only watching half an hour of a movie before I start Googling the end. Know this sounds pretty bizarre haha.
Joss: I do it sometimes too when I’m involved in the story of a series but it’s just really going downhill. Often I’m like screw this but I still need to satisfy my curiosity, so I end up Googling as well. But movies? That’s another level man!
Charlie: It’s probably my darkest confession. Normally I joke and say that’s why I’m so into music, as one side of a record is never longer than 15 mins. I just can’t sit and watch one thing for that long.
Joss: Stingray has the same right? He can’t sit still, that’s why he mixes so fast. I remember when he was playing back 2 back De School with Objekt at De School and he was scratching and doing backspins on the slipmat when it wasn’t his turn. Just to keep himself busy. Big respect for Stingray, by the way, hope he’s doing alright.
